Nothing like a good old American Hamburger and French Fries. Unfortunately most of them are not all that good for you. So when I make them at home, I try to change it up a bit and use White Turkey meat so our burgers are more healthful. I always add different elements to our burgers to give them some great flavor. I like to make baked red potato wedges and a green salad for our sides dishes. A classic meal turned healthful.
Herbed Turkey Burger
The Turkey Burger
1-¼ pounds of White Ground Turkey
½ sweet onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt to season
1 tablespoon fresh basil, roughly chopped
½ teaspoon fresh sage, finely chopped
2/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
½ tsp garlic salt
Fresh ground salt and pepper to season
2 small or 1 large ripe avocados
½ teaspoon garlic salt
4 whole wheat hamburger buns
coconut butter (or oil of choice)
Fresh baby spinach
1.) In a pan saute onion and minced garlic cloves in olive oil until caramelized. About 4-5 minutes. Season with sea salt and set aside.
2.) In a medium bowl combine ground turkey, sauteed onions and garlic, basil, sage, Parmesan cheese, garlic salt and pepper. Mix together with hands.
Once well combined form 4 turkey patties.
In a large pan and the heat on medium low, cook turkey burgers 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the middle is no longer pink.
3.) While the turkey burgers are cooking prepare your avocado spread. Cut ripened avocados in half, remove the seed, scoop out the avocado from the peel and put in a small bowl. With a fork, roughly mash the avocado. Don’t over mash; there should still be little chunks. Then add ½ teaspoon garlic salt and mix well.
4.) Prepare your whole-wheat buns by spreading coconut butter on the inside. Once the Turkey burgers are done and removed from pan, put buns in the pan to toast up. It will only take 1-2 minutes.
5.) Assemble your turkey burger. Bottom bun, turkey burger, spinach leaves, tomato slices, and top bun with avocado spread. ENJOY!
Variation: This burger has a mild flavor. To add more intense flavor you can add green chilies, cilantro, red pepper flakes, a slice of cheese or even top with more sauteed onions and garlic.
